My Biography

Hello everyone! I’m LeAnn, a second-year Psychology student. This is also my second year in HWUMSA! Starting as a Treasurer, this year I stand before you today as a running candidate for the position of Vice President of Wellbeing for HWUMSA 24/25.

My journey at this university so far has been marked by dedication to make a positive impact on the lives of my peers. Throughout my time at the university, I have actively engaged in various leadership roles not only within HWUMSA but also outside of HWUMSA, demonstrating my passion for fostering unity, empowerment, and effectiveness. Whether through my involvement in the student council or participation in other extra-curricular, my purpose was always consistent, strive to make a difference and do my best to be the voice of my peers.

Today, I come with a drive for a greater purpose for the position of Vice President of Wellbeing, to be the YOUR voice and the student community. With this role I envision the start of a new tenure of elevating your student experience and welfare, advocating for your student rights, and championing initiatives that promote supportive and inclusive community. Fuelled by this very passion and my dedication to make a difference, I am ready to serve you all with unwavering dedication and commitment.

My Manifesto

As you Vice President of Wellbeing, I come to you with a clear purpose and a set of manifestos that reflect my dedication to creating positive change within our community. These manifestos are not just promises; they are the guiding principles that will shape my actions and decisions as your Vice President of Wellbeing.

As your Vice President of Wellbeing this tenure, I will ensure that;

  1. YOUR student voices are prioritized, ensuring that YOUR needs and concerns are not only heard but also addressed and acted upon.

  2. The gaps within our student community are bridged by fostering an inclusive campus environment, where differences are celebrated, and every student feels like they have a place here.

  3. We work towards enhancing the student welfare and creating YOUR ideal campus environment, from mental health support to ensuring access to necessary resources, I will be a relentless advocate for your wellbeing.

What motivated me to nominate myself?

It is simple: a deep-seated belief that every student deserves to feel heard and supported. As a current student, what motivated me to run for Vice President of Wellbeing stems from my firsthand experience witnessing the challenges that students face in terms of their mental, emotional, and physical health. I've seen friends and peers struggle with stress, anxiety, and other issues that can impact their overall wellbeing and academic success. This personal observation has fueled my desire to take action and make a positive difference in addressing these challenges within our school community.

Moreover, one of my recent experiences was being the Head of the Orientation Committee, which contributed to why I am running for this role today. In leading the committee, I had the opportunity to welcome new students to our university community and ensure their smooth transition into campus life. Through this experience, I learned firsthand the importance of creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their background or identity. It allowed me to understand the diverse needs and concerns of our student body, especially during critical transitional periods. My experiences collaborating with the university wellbeing team have also equipped me with valuable insights into effectively addressing student needs and prioritizing their welfare. I have seen firsthand the impact that proactive, student-centered initiatives can have on our community, and I am committed to continuing this work as your Vice President of Wellbeing.

I believe that by taking on the role of Vice President of Wellbeing, I can actively work towards implementing initiatives and resources that support the holistic health and happiness of every student.

My top three priorities

As your HWUMSA Vice President of Wellbeing, I will continue to serve the student body on a much larger scale by focusing on 3 main areas:

  1. YOUR Student Voice – Prioritizing student voices is essential as it ensures that the needs and concerns of the student body are accurately represented and addressed. It fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment among students, knowing that your feedback to us holds weight in decision-making processes. Your feedback will be the driving force behind every decision I make as your Vice President of Wellbeing. My goal is to establish an effective system for gathering your feedback and being your voice by relaying your concerns and feedback to the respective university administration. By acting upon student feedback, I want to ensure that your voices contribute to the shaping the policies and initiatives implemented on campus.

  2. Inclusivity - Regardless of background, identity, or circumstance, every student deserves to feel like they belong here. An inclusive campus environment ensures that every student feels valued, respected, and supported, creating a sense of belonging for all. My goal is to create a campus environment where diversity is celebrated, and every student feels welcomed and included.

  3. Collaboration - Student welfare is essential for promoting overall well-being and academic success. Having access to the necessary resources and support systems, allows you to thrive during your time on campus and being the best version of yourself. My goal is to work with the wellbeing team and the university to implement student welfare initiatives that address various aspects of your well-being as a student, including your mental health, physical health and emotional wellbeing.

What would I bring to the role?

To HWUMSA

  1. Experience in Leadership: My tenure as the Head of the Orientation Committee as well as being the current Treasurer has provided you with invaluable experience in both leading a team and coordinating initiatives for students. These roles have equipped me with the skills and insights necessary to effectively lead the wellbeing team and collaborate with the university to advocate for your student welfare and well-being.

  2. Innovative Thinking: I have a forward-thinking mindset and a passion for innovation. I am committed to introducing fresh ideas and creative solutions to address challenges and seize opportunities within HWUMSA, particularly in the realm of student wellbeing.

To HWUM

  1. Understanding of Student Needs: As a current student myself, I have firsthand experience navigating university life, which gives me a unique understanding of the diverse needs and concerns of our student body.  My prior experience in collaborating with the university wellbeing team and involvement in student council allows me to understand the intricacies of student needs from various perspectives. This experience has honed my ability to empathize with my peers and recognize the challenges they may face in their academic and personal lives, empowering me to effectively prioritize student voices and advocate for initiatives that address these challenges.

  2. Drive and Commitment: Above all, I am driven and committed to prioritizing the well-being and interest of the student community. With this role I will bridge the student community and university to advocate for initiatives for student welfare, allowing students a more active role in shaping their own educational journey and that their voices deserve to be heard at every level of decision-making. I aim to create an environment where students feel empowered to voice their concerns, share their ideas, and actively contribute to the improvement of our university community.
