Preferential Voting! Rank the candidates based on your preference
You may also vote to reopen nominations if you think none of the candidates are suited for the position
Repeat the process for all the other positions
Congrats! Your votes have been counted
What is Preferential Voting?
The HWUMSA election will be using the preferential voting system.
In a normal voting system, the candidate with the highest vote wins.
In a preferential voting system, the candidate that is preferred by most voters wins the election. Voters get to rank the candidates based on their preference.
If no candidates receive more than half of the first preference votes, then
The candidate with the least number of first preference votes is eliminated
Votes casted as second preference to the eliminated candidate are then added to the respective second-preferred candidates
This process is repeated until one candidate has more than half of the votes and becomes the winner, or when there is only one candidate remaining
When voting for HWUMSA 2021/22,
You may vote by clicking the candidates in order of your preference
You may disregard your 2nd and 3rd option, but it is best to rank your preference
Remember to vote for all positions!
What is 'Reopen nominations'?
For each position, students are able to vote for the candidates nominated for that position or the option to reopen nominations.
Voting for 'reopen nominations' means that
You are unhappy with, or do not believe that there is a suitable candidate for the position, and you would like the nomination period to be reopened so that more candidates can be sourced for the Elections.
If the majority of the students voted for 'reopen nominations'
No candidates will be elected to that position. Nominations will re-open for that position, with the election held at a later date.
Q: What is 'Preferential Vote'?
A: This means that rather than just picking a single winner, you rank each candidate in your order of preference. In the case where your preferred candidate is eliminated, your vote will be added to your NEXT preference.
Q: What is 'Reopen Nomination'?
A: Voting for 'Reopen Nomination' means that you are unhappy with, or do not believe that there is a suitable candidate for the position, and you would like the nomination period to be reopened so that more candidates can be sourced for the Elections.
Q: Who are eligible to vote?
A: Only ACTIVE STUDENTS are eligible to vote.
Q: I am a postgraduate student who continued my studies after graduating from an undergraduate in HWUM. Which HW ID should I use?
A: Postgrad students should use their new HW login details as these are the most current.
Q: Are PHD students eligible to vote?
Q: Can students from different campuses cast their vote?
A: Voting is based on the campus that you are currently studying for the year. Meaning Malaysian students studying in UK won’t be able to vote, however, UK students studying in Malaysia can vote.
Q: What if I accidentally misplaced the order of candidates? What should I do? How do I re-order my candidate choice based on my preference?
I accidentally clicked...
And my preferred choice would be...
A: Your preferences are shown under the "Your Vote" title. As long as you haven't already clicked the "Place Vote" button, you can remove the name of the candidate under the "Your Vote" title to remove them from your preference. However, if you have clicked "Place Vote" then the vote is locked in and cannot be changed.
Q: Can I view current voting statistics?
A: Voting statistics can be viewed at www.hwunion.com/elections/statistics - anyone can view this page to see how the voting is going.
Q. What should I do if I face login issues:
When logging into the website, you need to use the "Student Login" section on the login page which will ask you for your HW login details. You should not use the "Guest / Staff Login" or "Register as a Guest" as this will not give you the access to vote.
If you have logged in as described above and it is not working, check the following:
If you get a message saying your username / password is incorrect make sure you are using your HW login details like how you would to access your email
If you get a message that says "Uh Oh - we can't find you!", 99% of the time it means you are no longer enrolled with the University. This might happen if you move from an undergrad to a postgrad course, but are using your undergrad login details to login. If you believe you are using the correct login details, you should contact the Student Service Centre to see if there is a problem and have the University correct it
If a student is able to login successfully, but the website says they are not eligible to vote, it is most likely that you are not enrolled correctly with the University or are on a Temporary Suspension of Studies. Only students with an enrolment status "EN" can vote in elections. As above, you should contact the Student Service Centre to see if there is a problem and have the University correct it
If everything above has been checked and have all been corrected, but you still face issues, you would need to get in touch with us at firstname.lastname@example.org to see what is the problem so we can fix it.
