My Biography

My name is Pearlyn, I am a visionary leader with a passion for service and advocacy, currently running as the President of the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Student Association (HWUMSA) 24/25. Driven by a deep-seated desire to effect positive change, I always actively engaged in leadership roles within HWUMSA and club and society in the university. With a steadfast commitment to fostering unity, empowerment, and positive change within the student community, I have the confidence to bring a better student study experience with the wealth of experience and dedication to this esteemed role. I am here embarked on a mission to elevate the student experience, advocate for student rights, and champion initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through strategic planning, effective communication, and unwavering dedication, we have spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing student welfare, academic support, and campus engagement.

My Manifesto

As HWUMSA President, I am humbled and honoured to present my manifesto. With a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to serving our student community, I present to you my vision for a vibrant, inclusive, and student-centric HWUMSA.


  1. Empowering Student Voices: I firmly believe that every student's voice matters and deserves to be heard. As President, I will establish regular open forums and feedback sessions to provide a platform for students to voice their concerns, ideas, and suggestions. Additionally, I will work to enhance communication channels, ensuring that students are informed and engaged in all aspects of HWUMSA's activities and decision-making processes. I’ll also prioritise and act on student voice.

  2. Fostering Inclusivity and Diversity: Our strength lies in our diversity. I am committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming campus environment where every student feels valued, respected, and represented. I will represent and rely student voice to the university both globally and locally which advocate for policies that promote diversity and inclusion across all aspects of university life.

  3. Student Empowerment and Leadership Development: I believe in the power of student-led initiatives and grassroots activism. As President, I will empower students to take ownership of their university experience by providing opportunities for leadership development, skills training, and community engagement. Through workshops, seminars, and networking events, I will equip students with the tools and resources they need to become effective leaders and agents of change within our campus and beyond.


The road ahead may be challenging, but together, we have the power to overcome any obstacle and achieve our shared vision for a thriving, inclusive, and student-centred HWUMSA. With your support and trust, I am confident that we can build a brighter future for all students at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

What motivated me to nominate myself?

  • Passion for Positive Change: I'm inspired by a desire to make a difference and improve our student community.

  • Vision for Impact: I have a clear vision for positive change and am motivated to enact it through effective leadership.

My top three priorities

Provide a platform for student voices, fostering transparency and communication.


Tasks:

  1. Schedule frequent open forums.

  2. Promote forums through various channels.

  3. Implement effective online feedback mechanisms.

  4. Evaluate and adjust for effectiveness.


By executing these steps, we aim to enhance student engagement and address concerns effectively

What would I bring to the role?

Leadership Experience: I have a lot leadership experience gained from previous roles within HWUMSA and other organizations. This experience has equipped me with the skills and insights needed to effectively lead and inspire others.


Collaboration Skills and connection: I'm good at working with diverse groups to find common ground and achieve our goals together.


Vision and Innovation: I have a forward-thinking mindset and a passion for innovation. I am committed to introducing fresh ideas and implementing creative solutions to address challenges and seize opportunities within HWUMSA.


Communication Skills: I possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, allowing me to effectively convey ideas, engage with staffs, and advocate for student interests. Clear and transparent communication is key to building trust and fostering engagement within our community.


Commitment to Student Welfare: Above all, I am deeply committed to prioritizing the wellbeing and interests of our fellow students. I will tirelessly advocate for initiatives that enhance student welfare, promote inclusivity, and create a supportive and enriching university experience for all.


As the first female president of HWUMSA, my leadership represents a significant milestone in our university's journey towards inclusivity and gender equality. I bring a fresh perspective to the role, ensuring that the voices and interests of female students are heard and valued. My presidency serves as an inspiration for future generations of female leaders, demonstrating that barriers can be overcome and diverse perspectives embraced. I am committed to advancing initiatives that promote equity and inclusion, fostering an environment where all students can thrive and contribute to our collective success.
