Key Duties and Responsibilities

The purpose of this position is to provide an opportunity for the newly elected Vice-President Sports (VPS) of the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Student Association (HWUMSA) to enhance student experience and to focus on student engagement, identity and belonging. In addition, this position requires a good understanding of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) organisational structure and departmental roles, including the day-to-day operations that support the student community and to accomplish specific tasks, as outlined in the key duties and responsibilities below.

The Student Life (SL) is an integral part of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM). This office is responsible for providing practical advice and professional services to a wide range of customers, which include students, parents, sponsors and staff, on all kinds of student matters including settling into university life, financial aid, accommodation, disability, counselling and wellbeing, careers advice and international student support, managing Heriot- Watt University Malaysia student association as well as managing the University main reception.

Requirements

Nominees running for the student position must satisfy the following:

  • Studied in Heriot-Watt University Malaysia for at least one semester; and

  • Studying in HWUM for the academic year 2024/2025we.

Job Description

The role of the Vice-President Sports (VPS) exists to represent the views and needs of all students studying at HWUM and developing the student experience. The VPS remit includes organising activities that promote physical wellbeing and sportsmanship.

The VPS shall be responsible for:

  • Deputising, with the consent of the President;

  • Working alongside the University whenever possible to ensure that the Partnership Agreement is fully supported by both student bodies and University;

  • Leading and supervising the Student Council’s appointed officers and subcommittees of the HWUMSA Sports Department.

  • Supporting and chairing the Sports activities working group; coordinating its work and activities;

  • Coordinating sports events that meet the needs of a diverse range of students and enhancing the students’ experiences, developing and working in partnership with other University stakeholders, such as AHappierU committee and EmPOWER team;

  • Encouraging an active lifestyle and promoting physical wellbeing for all members of student body;

  • Actively participating in University bodies and committees as required;

  • Proactively propose to the University on the necessary sports equipment that are needed by students to ensure smooth running of sports activities among the student community.

  • Promoting equal rights and opportunities for the student community;

  • Actively enabling the enhancement of student life and student experience through sports;

  • Appointing, managing and developing members through democratic procedures, exclusively on sports clubs;

  • Working with sports leaders in order to collect sports related feedback from the student community and work towards improving the council’s systems and events in relation to sports;

  • Ensuring sportsmanship is promoted throughout all sports events that are organized internally or externally;

  • Supporting sports clubs’ presidents in planning and promoting the sporting activities within the student community;

  • Such other matters as appropriate or agreed by HWUMSA from time to time.
